AA Bargain Mini Storage Moving Tip No. 2

How to load a moving truck…

By now you’ve decided to relocate your stuff to a mini storage facility. But what order is best when loading the truck?

Like eating your vegetables before dessert, moving the heaviest items early in your move is the correct decision. Why? Because you don’t want these items shifting while en route to your self-storage space, and placing them in the moving truck early ensures stability. (And if you move a bunch of light items first, you might not have the energy for the heavy stuff later!).

Before you lift anything, make sure you’ve got the right moving truck. As a general rule, consider that every five feet worth of moving truck generally equals about one room. Most 10-foot trucks will accommodate a studio or one-bedroom move. A 20-foot truck should accommodate three bedrooms rooms, and so on. Remember: It is better to have extra room than not enough!

Also, utilize moving equipment such as dollies and ramps. And don’t attempt to move heavy items by yourself.

Now for the specifics:

Move the heaviest items – washers and dryers, refrigerators, stoves and other appliances – first. Place these items against the front wall nearest the cab. Also be sure to place cardboard underneath the appliances and cover each item with a blanket or tarp for protection. Most trucks accommodate moving straps to minimize shifting during your relocation.

Next move other large items – such as beds, book cases, couches and tables. Place the items along the sides of the truck, balancing the load equally. Be sure to remove shelves and table legs when applicable (and disassemble bed frames).

Next begin packing heavy boxes on the floor in the open space. Boxes can be stacked, but place the heaviest boxes on the bottom and the lightest on top. After that, put last-minute items and fragile goods in your moving van. Place items snugly together, which will help prevent shifting while relocating.

Finally, treat yourself – you’re halfway through the move. Drink water and energize yourself with something tasty. You’ve earned it!
